DER roll out A day at the beach

without comments

Well it was actually day 2 of our roll out. Came across some pitfalls though.

  • First one is pre-commission¬†as many machines as possible to speed up the process
  • Have all of year 9 change their internet passwords the day before. Un like staff students are not forced to update their passwords every 60 days. The process requires that their passwords are freshly updated.
  • Have as many tech useful staff with your TSO as is possible.

As you can understand the kids are excited and impatient. Many have already told me that their teachers don’t want to see them in class. I guess this is because they go straight back to class and get them out ready to work. A group of keen boy’s has sussed out the best hot spot for breaks under the English staff room so they can play games.

Now we know the best approach they should all go out tomorrow and line up on Monday with all the faults.

Roll out laptop fixes???

with 3 comments

Having finally logged on to my laptop and comissioned 20 others, I can tell you all that the previously advised fixes from DET have not worked.

Not sure why but they will have to wait 2 weeks. Seems a bit silly that all updates can only be acquired through the DET ISP. [There probably is no other way]

DER laptops are go!!!!

without comments

By accident today I started my laptop and left it alone connected to the server. Half an hour later I logged on and…… it worked, loaded my desktop and away I went.

Soon after the call went out to all the T1 roll out staff and we were away. Out of 25 machines 1 was stuffed out of the box, 1 did not follow the commissioning process so its a dud until the TSO arrives, 1 has the same log in issues from the first day and the rest were acquired very enthusiastically in a short period of time.

It is going to take a while I believe for folks to familiarise themselves with these machines. The tiny screen not to many are used to plus the applications on them. Another factor will be not to many people have experience with windows vista and windows 7 works and looks very similar.

I would like to here from others and there DER roll out experience.

I got my DER laptop today

without comments

I commissioned my DER laptop earlier today. The whole commission process was a breeze, the little box even knew I was a teacher. The problem was when it restarted. I entered my details and a little red x appeared with some explanatory text. I tried a couple of different things without success. My little laptop was null.

Off to the help-desk, I have to say it was the fastest IT help-desk response I have ever had. After my explanation I was instructed to try a different user name and password without success. So the first two laptops commissioned at my school have this little error and the help-desk will get back to us asap. The parting comfort given was your not only ones.

Has anyone else experienced this problem???

First rollout fixes

without comments

As with anything new there will be teething issues. The new laptops are no exception. There are currently 2 fixes available from the intranet.

  1. Over comes early issues with the commissioning process.
  2. Over comes issues related to the use of Windows7 OS

Nothing to major just little hiccups on the way to success.
